Food Explorer Classes
Who are Food Explorer Classes Right for?
A variety of families! Perhaps your child has mealtime challenges such as refusal to try new foods, refusal of entire groups of textures, rigidity about mealtime structures, challenging behaviors at mealtime, or others. Or, maybe you would simply like your child to participate in sensory experiences while working on social and language skills with friends. The Food Explorer classes focus on skill development, social skills, language development, fine motor skills, oral motor skills and tasting new foods. Goals are individualized for each participant.
About Food Explorer Classes
In Food Explorer classes, children interact with foods in a no-pressure way to build repeated positive experiences. The following research-based strategies are used to take steps towards encouraging interactions with new foods:
- Repeated Exposure: Research tells us that the more exposures to an initially disliked food, the more likely the child is to consume and eventually like that food. In Food Explorer classes, we will repeat exposures to a variety of foods in ways that are fun and positive for children.
- Shaping: Consuming food is about more than sitting down at the table and taking a bite. In Food Explorer classes, we will work up towards tasting new foods by interacting with food with all the senses and encouraging baby steps towards taking bites.
- Positive Reinforcement: It’s important to have repeated positive experiences during mealtimes for children to learn to enjoy them and want to be a part of them. Food Explorer classes use positive reinforcement to pair mealtime with fun, rewarding experiences.
